For the Love of Sheep
An Afghan Square by True North Yarn Co. for the 2015 Lakeside Yarn Crawl

Basic knits & purls are all that's used to create a quick, textured 8” afghan square.
Don't be afraid to embellish with your own details – add beads for eyes, surface crochet outlines for the heart or sheep to add colour & definition, embroider some sheepy facial features...
the options are endless!     K



Yarn: Worsted Weight
Needles: 4.5mm or 5.0mm
Gauge: 4.5 stitches per inch

Cast on 35 stitches.
Follow chart or written instructions for 48 rows.
Bind off. Weave in Ends. Block gently.

4mm Needle
Worsted weight yarn
Sample done in 3dogknits worsted weight yarn Colourway “Purple Sock Party”
Tapestry needle

Gauge: 18sts in 4 inches in stitch pattern

Abbreviations:
YO: Yarn over
Garter Stitch: knit every row
sts: stitches

Pattern stitch:
Row 1 and all wrong size rows: knit 3 purl to last 3 sts knit 3
Row 2: knit 3 * yo,  knit 3, pass yo over  last 3 stitches, knit 3,  repeat from * to last 3 sts, knit 3
Row 4: repeat row 2 
Row 6: repeat row 2
Row 8: knit 3 * knit 3, yo, knit 3, pass  yo over  last 3 stitches, repeat  from * to last 6 sts, knit 6
Row 10: repeat row 8
Row 12: repeat row 8

The square: 
Cast on 36 sts. Knit 3 rows garter sts.

Start pattern on wrong size row.

Repeat pattern stitch rows  1 to 12  3 times, then rows 1 to 6 once (42 rows).

Knit 3 rows of garter sts. and cast off.

Weave in ends with tapestry needle and block to desired size (sample is 8 inches square).

Pattern: multiple of 6 sts plus 4sts, 2 edge stitches creates small border

Row 1: (RS) K2, (Sl1 purlwise, K2, PSSO, K3) repeat, K2

Row 2: (WS) K2, (P4, YO, P1) repeat, K2

Row 3: (RS) K2, (K3, Sl1 purlwise, K2 PSSO) repeat, K2

Row 4: (WS) K2, (P1, YO, P4) repeat, K2

Cast on 40sts

Knit 2 rows, start pattern and repeat rows 1 – 4 approx. 13 times

Materials:  1 - 50 gram ball of Color by Kristin (or any worsted weight yarn)
Needles:  4.5 mm circular or straight needles
Abbreviations:
K – knit
yo – yarn over
k2tog – knit 2 together

Pattern:
Cast on 36 stitches using long tail cast on with 4.5 mm needles.
Knit 4 rows of garter stitch.
Row 1:  K4, (K5, yo, k2tog) to last 4 stitches, K4.
Row 2 and all even rows:  K4, purl to last 4 stitches, K4.
Row 3:  K4, (K4, yo, k2tog, K1) to last 4 stitches, K4.
Row 5:  K4, (K3, yo, k2tog, K2) to last 4 stitches, K4.

STRIPED SQUARE in 2 ply Philosopher’s Wool   

                                 

Finished Size:  8” x 8”

Needles:  US 8, 5 mm circular or straight needles   

This square is knit on the diagonal.

Pattern:
Cast on 3 stitches.
Increase one stitch at the beginning of each row, changing colour every 1 to 5 rows.
Repeat until the side of your square measures 8 inches.
Now decrease at the beginning of each row, continuing with the striping as before, until you have 3 stitches left.
Cast off and darn in any unwoven ends.

Row 1: Insert right hand needle into stitch knit wise and knit one. Leave stitch on needle. 
Insert right hand needle into back of loop and knit one. Leave stitch on needle (you now have 2 stitches). 
Insert needle into the front of stitch knit wise and knit one (you now have 3 stitches on right hand needle. Drop the left hand stitch from the needle. Turn your work
Row 2: Purl 3 stitches. Turn
Row 4: Knit 3. Turn

Lakeside Yarn Crawl wraps up today

Well, it's been a wonderful time receiving all the crawlers at our ports of call. 

Drop your ballots off at your LYS or last stop on the crawl. 

You will have until Monday September 14th to drop your passports in to qualify for the draws. Unfortunately, any passports received after that date, will not be counted.   

If you have collected five or more stamps on your passport, drop that off too. 
We will have a secondary draw for a lucky participant. 

Give us a couple of weeks to collect and tally up the ballots. 

We will contact the winners by email/phone and arrange a timing to pick up the winnings. 

We will post the winners names on our blog, ravelry pages and facebook pages too. 

We hope you have had a fun time!!

How's your yarn crawling?

We now have just over 30 days left in the Lakeside Yarn Crawl before it wraps up for another year. 

We are starting to receive full passports at some of the yarn shops and you know what that means??

Your fully stamped passport is entered into the draw for the Grand Prize gift.... a basket full of lovely items donated by our yarn distributors. 

Even if you won't have time to travel the entire crawl, don't despair, you have still filled in your draw ballot at each of the shops for a chance to win their wonderful gift basket.

Start your engines - the Lakeside Yarn Crawl has begun...

Here's a few details- 

Start date: Saturday June 13th
Finish date: Monday September 7th

Crawling participating rules:
1. Crawler must be 18 or older to participate
2. Only 1 passport per crawler
3. Crawler must be present when their passport is stamped or signed

This year, every shop will have a draw for a gorgeous basket of goodies. 
           Ballots are available at each shop - ask for yours!!

NEW
This year the grand prize basket is filled with donation supplies from 
all of our suppliers!! 
As soon as we have everything in place, I will post an amazing picture. 

To have the chance to WIN the grand prize, a fully stamped passport must be filled in. Leave your passport at the last shop or return it to your LYS from the list below. 

NEW - Every shop has created a lovely pattern for an 8" Afghan Square. 
The pattern is FREE, so please ask for yours.

Hey summer yarn lovers! All of us at True North Yarn Co. are pumped to be 
part of the Lakeside Yarn Crawl again this year. There’s nothing better for 
our Simcoe County/Georgian Bay summers than sharing favourite beachside projects! 
Check out our cozy new shop location in Cedar Pointe Plaza in Barrie.
